The 2013 Best of Boston issue of Boston Magazine is out on stands this week, and we are honored to announce that we’ve won an award for Best Optical Shop! Here’s what the editors over at the city’s top magazine, presenting its 40th Anniversary awards issue, had to say:
Regardless of your spectacle tendencies – quirky or clean – Brookline’s Vizio Optic will identify the most flattering frames for your face, then present you with options: Chanel, Beausoleil, and Ray-Ban are just a few of the brands carried. An optician on site guarantees that you’ll soon be seeing – and looking – much better.
The Best of Boston Award is considered one of the most aspired-to accolades in both Greater Boston and much of New England, so it is with great honor that we accept the title and with much gratitude to our wonderful customers as well. Without you, our readers, our customers and our friends, we would not be an award-winning company!
This year marks our sixth Best of Boston award! We first won in 2006 for the Best Eyeglasses, also winning in that category in 2007 and 2009. In 2010, we earned our first Best Optical Shop award, then Vizio Optic was named the Best Sunglasses shop in 2012. To be given these titles by members of our local community is a sign that we’re doing something right, and we thank everyone who has ever visited our shop for being a part of our story.
Mirrored designer sunglasses are one of the biggest trends in fashion right now, spotted on athletes, celebrities and some of our favorite style bloggers as well. But what is it about that beautiful shine that makes us jump for joy every time a new pair arrives at Vizio?
For us, it’s all the cool colors the lenses come in – shades of pink, blue, green, orange, yellow…. you name it, we have it. This is prime time to have color-popping accessories, and despite their ’80s roots, bright mirror lenses give add a modern edge to any outfit. Check out a few of our favorites below from Ray Ban sunglasses, and try pairing them with simple, delicate outfits for an eye-popping look.
Ray Ban Large Metal Aviator sunglasses feature crystal green mirror lenses to complement their classic gold frame. With the original aviator silhouette, all you need is a touch of color to bring this style into 2013.
Meanwhile, these Ray Ban Folding Wayfarer sunglasses get an upgrade as well with their cool black and navy frame complemented by crystal blue mirror lenses. Not only does it looks pretty awesome, but it conveniently folds into a small size that fits perfectly in a shirt pocket or small inner pocket in your purse.
Last but not least, Ray Ban Cats sunglasses take the typical aviator silhouette and give it a matte, transparent frame in plastic with crystal brown lenses that boast an orange mirror treatment. The most complex of all three styles, Cats will be the showstopper this summer, so make sure to tone down the rest of your outfit to let this baby shine.
Earlier this year when we discussed what the designer eyewear trends would be for 2013, we never though round frames would blow up as much as they did! Circular lenses have been making their way down the catwalk all over the world, appearing on today’s top fashion bloggers, and gracing the pages of our favorite style bibles. And which brand has been at the center of all the attention? One of our favorites, MYKITA eyeglasses and sunglasses, furthering its global popularity and solidifying its place as the go-to designer for high-end and high-quality accessories.
In the June 2013 issue of Germany’s J’N’C magazine, the model wears a pair of MYKITA Bibi eyeglasses, a bold style that is perfect for those who like a unique look. Perfectly round lenses are encased within a titanium opal frame, separated by a complementary gold bridge. The arms are gold as well, attached to the front with the brand’s interlocking hinges that eliminate the use of screws. This makes the frame super flexible and strong! Bibi is also available in Coral Red with gold accents and Black with silver accents.
In last month’s edition of L’Officiel in France, this chic model dons a pair of MYKITA Yolanda sunglasses, which perfectly flatter her features with their round frame and center-set arms, which create balance throughout her look. She is wearing the frame in Black, but these MYKITA sunglasses are also available in Tobago, Chocolate Chips, Taupe, and Blue Pearl.
What are your favorite round styles for this season?
Okay, okay, we’ve highlighted this one before, but we can’t help but share when one of our favorite frames is available in a new color! It’s like when you find the perfect pair of jeans, you have to have them in multiple washes to go with your every outfit – we need MYKITA Franz sunglasses in every color! Our love affair began when we first saw Sarah Jessica Parker wear her gold Franz shades in the Sex and the City 2 movie and continued as they kept releasing them in black, silver, and more recently a bold cobalt blue. Today, we bring you a new color combo:
Alex is wearing Franz in Blue Velvet with Green Flash lenses. This style is flattering for both men and women, with mirror lenses that are right on trend this summer. We love the navy blue titanium frame, which features the brand’s screw-less hinge – this increases the frame’s flexibility and strength and also allows for simple repairs. The hinge is made of interlocking pieces, so arms snap right back on if they happen to fall off in an accident.
Franz is part of a collaboration between MYKITA and Bernard Willhelm, a German fashion designer, that started as limited edition, but has risen to such great popularity that the brand keeps rolling out new colors. We won’t complain! This frame is also available in a bright orange with metallic orange lenses to match. Interested? This specific color is not yet on our website, but you can email us at email@example.com for more info on how to purchase this frame.
What do you think of the new color? Would you wear it?

In January and February, Wicked Local published ballots in their newspapers and online for readers to vote on their favorite local businesses in more than 75 categories. Readers from the Greater Boston area cast their votes, and results were calculated by an independent firm and provided to Wicked Local.
Oliver Goldsmith was a true artist and a magnificent observer, taking in all that he saw and letting it fuel his work. His designer sunglasses were inspired by the most beautiful things around him – especially beautiful faces and places. As for faces, we’ve all seen his frames adorned by and for Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and more, but he also created frames that were odes to his home of London.
Above, one of our customers wears Oliver Goldsmith Berwick sunglasses, which was designed in 1979 and named after a street in the capital city where his favorite pub, the Berwick arms, was located. Back in the ’80s when the brand was an official outfitter for the Royal Family, this particular pair was given to Prince Charles. His then wife, Princess Diana, decided to enjoy them herself and was famously seen wearing them on the cover of Tatler magazine in 1985, creating a surge in its popularity.
The color our friend is wearing is Electric Tortoise, which features a tortoise frame complemented by blue details throughout, most prominently on the stripes that detail the bridge and brow. Berwick is also available in black and white, crystal sapphire, black quartz, white quartz, and black raspberry. We love the distinctively retro design with its plastic aviator silhouette and keyhole bridge. The blue is complementary and looks fantastic when hit by the sun.
Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses have been worn by many icons over the years and each have an intriguing story behind their creation. Head over to VizioOptic.com to explore our selection of ICONS shades and pick up a pair of your own!
Staying on top of trends is a favorite hobby of ours, but sometimes it’s nice to get back to basics. A true classic never goes out of style and the one hit we see year after year is a pair of iconic Ray Ban sunglasses. The iconic Wayfarer has been one of the American brand’s defining looks for decades, reinventing the frame year after year with different colors, patterns and various takes on the original silhouette. “Effortlessly cool” are probably the two most-often used words to describe this week’s frame, chosen by our friend Massaoud.
Above, Massaoud wears a pair of Ray Ban New Wayfarer 2132 sunglasses in color 902, tortoise, which fit perfectly with his personality and sense of style. Tortoise is a classic pattern that is flattering on pretty much everyone. The New Wayfarer is a modified version of the original silhouette, with a shorter lens to fit smaller faces. The rectangular lens edges are slightly more curved for a softer look as well.
As with most of Ray Ban’s Icons collection, this frame is available in multiple colors. In addition to tortoise, the New Wayfarer comes in black, light blue rubber, black rubber, and brown gradient. There are also several sizes to choose from so you can enjoy a pair of designer sunglasses no matter how small or large your proportions are.

Sunglasses haven’t gotten larger just for the glamour effect, there’s a good reason your frames are getting taller and wider, and it’s because our brands want to protect you from the sun as much as possible! Active folks who spend time outdoors, no matter which season, are more susceptible to ultraviolet radiation if they are participating in water or snow sports or even making their way up a mountain, and having the right pair of designer sunglasses is an important part of staying safe.
This is the wrong way to wear your shades this summer. They are far too small to provide enough protection for your eyes! UVA and UVB rays can still get to them on all sides because there’s no peripheral protection, and if you’re spending the day on the water you can seriously harm your eyes without enough to shield yourself from the sun. Here’s why.
Water reflects nearly 90 percent of UVB rays directly towards your eyes, which can excel the growth of cataracts and other eye conditions and put you at risk for ultraviolet keratitis (a sunburn of the eye that can be painful and lead to temporary blindness). Hikers need better protection around their eyes as well because UV radiation increases 4 percent for every 1,000 feet of elevation – and being around fresh snow on a mountain also carries the same percentage of reflected light as water.
So which frames are best for activities in the sun? Many athletes prefer Oakley sunglasses because they’re made with these type of activities in mind. They provide a close fit and many have side shields or wraparound-style frames to help keep out UV light. You also want to find a pair with polarized lenses that bock 100 percent of ultraviolet radiation. Here are a few styles that will help keep your eyes in tip-top shape throughout the year:
Oakley Offshoot sunglasses have a single polarized-lens shield protecting your eyes, with wide temples that help keep the sun out fo your eyes.
Contrary to popular belief, darker lenses don’t always mean they’re more protective. These Oakley Pit Boss sunglasses feature polarized lenses in a tungsten shade, which has the same level of polarization as the brand’s black lenses. Different colors simply serve different purposes, like providing better visual acuity in lower-light conditions or improved color contrast. The above color does the latter.
Oakley Tightrope sunglasses may resemble the size of the frame in our example of the wrong way to wear your sunglasses, but the brand’s three-point fit ensures that these are snug and secure around your eyes for the utmost protection. The ice iridium lenses reduce glare and are best for truer color perception in extremely bright light.
Fashion is all about taking chances. You could be the boldest dresser with mismatched prints and six-inch wedges, or maybe you’re the more refined type who chooses to stand out with one incredible accessory. Either way, the new collection J.F. Rey sunglasses is the perfect fit.
The Moonglasses line features unique shades with incredibly detailed frames, boasting laser-cut patterns that sit atop a delicate lace-like base. Bloody Lys has a feminine, “heraldic fleure-de-lis, representing purity and innocence,” according to Eyewear Magazine. On the masculine side (although let’s be honest, they’re pretty great for women, too) is Black Heart, crafted with a rebellious skull pattern throughout the metal frame, “layered with a gray-sprinkled metal coating reminiscent of rock structure.”
The metal Moonglasses are light and flexible, but it’s the macro lenses that make these frames so fascinating. Each pair is imprinted with the same pattern of its respective frame with a high-tech vacuum process. The prints don’t appear as bold as these stock photos suggest, but they are visible and create a stunning look that makes these designer sunglasses the most important accessory you’ll own this summer.
Bloody Lys is available in Antique Gold/Blue, Bronze, and Black, while Black Heart is offered in Granite, Khaki and Black. Check out more photos of the frames over at Eyewear Magazine where you can see the mirrored lenses in full effect and get a closer look at the detail of each pattern.
Curious about size? Bloody Lys measures in at 57/18/123, while Black Heart is a little wider at 60/19/125, fitting small to medium-sized faces.
What do you think of these new styles? Are you bold enough to wear them?
We’ve got big news, Vizio fans! This month, we were featured in the July 2013 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine alongside the most fabulous pair of designer sunglasses by Lafont! It is such an honor to be listed as the go-to retailer for Lafont eyewear and to be recognized in a national publication once again with one of our favorite brands!
The magazine’s creative director, Adam Glassman, took advantage of this sunny time in our lives to highlight just how important it is to protect your eyes in the summer. He chose three great frames to feature, including the wonderful Lafont Hampton sunglasses in light pink and brown. These glamorous shades have a modern cat-eye silhouette, with oval gradient lenses surrounded by transparent acetate frame, pointed in the upper corners for that retro feel.
Take a look at the famous frame:
How pretty is that? It’s the perfect choice for the season, making you feel as stylish and captivating as any celeb basking in the island sun. Hampton is also available in leopard, black with red accents, transparent purple, and tortoise.
Glassman also noted an important statistic from the Vision Council of America, that 52 percent of women forget to wear their sunglasses! We’d like to thing our blog readers have a much better habit of wearing their shades, so tell us, do you often forget to wear them or do you wear your sunnies religiously?
