Do I Really Need All That?

If it is has been a few years since you last purchased a new pair of glasses and it’s time for a new pair, it can be a little overwhelming.  First and foremost your new frame has to look great and be made of high quality acetate or titanium (especially if you intend to wear your glasses for more than two years). Vizio Optic can certainly help you find your new favorite frame.  In store or online we are able to fit you with the perfect pair.

Once you have chosen your new favorite pair of glasses you must now focus on your prescription lenses.  It is very common and understandable that having spent a considerable amount of money on a new frame to ask “do I really need all that” for my prescription lenses? You may feel that all the little extras are not really necessary and may opt out of choosing certain lens treatments without realizing what you are missing. Here are the top two key lens treatments available and the benefits of each.

Anti Reflective Treatment (AR).  This treatment reduces glare from outside light sources and is helpful for extended computer use and night driving.  AR also allows those looking at you to see your eyes instead of balls of dancing light in your lenses. Premium AR treatments have evolved to include anti-scratch, and additional UV protection all in one.  I wear my glasses full time and for me, I must have it and strongly recommend it to all eyeglass wearers.

I reRobin Wright glasses in House of Cardsalize that some may fear getting stuck with an older AR treatment that smudges and peels away over the years but fear not.  Premium AR treatments are embedded into the lens and can not peel off.  They are also easier to keep clean being hydro and oleophobic.

As an Optician, it also is a tiny pet-peeve of mine to see celebrities wearing amazing eyeglasses and not having AR on their lenses. When the spotlight hits and the camera flashes are flickering, it takes away from the overall look and I can’t see their eyes. Very distracting.  (See what I mean in the Robin Wright photo to the right?)

One of the premium AR treatments we recommend is CRIZAL No-Glare lenses

Transitions. Another treatment option that can be added to prescription lenses,  Transitions® adaptive lenses turn optical glasses into photochromic sunglasses with activation of UV light. The following information will help you decide if any of the three Transitions lens types are right for you:

Transitions Signature (clear lens will activate in UV light, but not behind the windshield of your car),

Transitions Vantage (clear lens that will turn into Polarized coverage with UV light exposure, does not work behind the car windshield ), and

Transitions XTRActive (clear lens that will activate in UV light including behind the windshield of your car).

I’m a sunglass girl, however, Transitions are a great option if you do not want to juggle multiple pairs of glasses but know that your eyes are being fully protected at all times. Children who wear glasses full time greatly benefit from Transitions.

It is always a good idea to ask your Optician questions about the prescription lens treatments available to you each time you update your eyeglass frames.  There are always new and improved treatments that are worth consideration for your new prescription lenses. After all, if you are making an investment in a beautiful handcrafted frame, your lenses should be just as shiny and your vision should not be compromised.

Randolph: Made in the USA

So many products are made out of our country these days. However, one of our favorite brands of designer eyewear is made right here in Massachusetts! Randolph Engineering was founded in Randolph, Massachusetts in 1972 and remains there to this day! The company is most well known for their aviator sunglasses US fighter pilots have been wearing for almost forty years!

These aviator sunglasses were invented by Jan Waszkiewicz. As the current CEO of Randolph Engineering, his son, Peter Waszkiewicz, is proud to keep his company in the US. When Randolph was first founded, 90% of eyewear was made in the United States and at the moment only 3% of designer frames are currently produced here!

While most companies took their production overseas, Randolph kept their company in the US. Waszkiewicz is thrilled to have stayed right where his father built the company. “We stayed. … And we love it and we’re on the forefront of bringing optical manufacturing back to this country” he said.

Putting the “Made in the USA” stamp on their eyewear is only one of the perks of their high quality production. “We’re well-known for our quality and are so confident, we’ll guarantee our frames for life” said Waszkiewicz.

Vizio Optic now carries a wide selection of styles from Randolph Engineering and we are proud to welcome this all American brand to our designer collection!

Eye Spy… Daniel Radcliffe in Robert Marc 677 Sunglasses

To emphasize our point in the last blog post that just because a frame is within a men’s or women’s collection, it doesn’t mean it only flatters men or women, we present you with this photo of Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe wearing a pair of Robert Marc 677 sunglasses – from the women’s collection!

Daniel Radcliffe is sporting Robert Marc sunglasses

Now that the actor has hung up the cape and wand for good, he’s looking pretty stylish these days, especially with his choice of accessories. With such dark features, the lightness of the Vintage Crystal acetate frame adds contrast that really makes the sunglasses stand out. The complementary tortoise pattern along the arms rounds out the whole look as well.

This frame has a great retro look, with its rounded grey lenses and wide keyhole bridge. The arms feature the brand’s signature hinge design as well, with the silver strip around the temple and a silver dot accent on each side. The 677 is also available in Vintage Tortoise with gray lenses, Matte Tortoise with brown lenses, Amber with gray lenses and tortoise arms, and Clear Gray with gray lenses and black arms.

So that settles it – don’t be afraid to peruse the men’s section if you’re a lady, and vice versa. You just might find the most flattering style for you!

Frame of the Week: Robert Marc 657 Sunglasses

We had a beautiful first day of fall in New England this weekend – a warm, sunny day with a crisp breeze, hot enough to wear our summer clothes but with reminders that the cooler weather is fast approaching. Many people don’t think they have to wear sunglasses when it’s cold out because the sun is not as strong (that’s why you’re cold, right?). Wrong! The sun may not be warming you up, but it sure is reflecting a lot of light, especially when the snow starts to fall, so it’s time to stock up on your fall designer eyewear!

Robert Marc 657 sunglasses

Our friend Jennifer found her perfect pair for fall, a Matte Vintage Tortoise pair of Robert 657 sunglasses in color 186. The frame is from the men’s collection, which has more structured features than the women’s line with its rectangular silhouette and minimal curves. This type of frame is flattering on faces with soft features by adding angles. (Which brings up a good point, just because a frame is in a men’s or women’s collection, that doesn’t mean it only looks good on a man or woman!)

Robert Marc 657 eyeglasses

We think Jennifer looks fantastic, and she picked out a timeless pair of Robert Marc sunglasses that will be stylish for many years to come. The tortoise pattern is a classic look, with details in the hinge that make the designer instantly recognizable. The 657 is also available in Nero, Tortoise, Amber, Matte Ashwood, and Vintage Crystal.

Style Icon: Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn Quote

If you follow us on Facebook, you may have already seen us sharing this quote, but we simply couldn’t agree more. Audrey Hepburn has always been a style inspiration to us, and we’re obviously not alone. From her words of wisdom shared daily on Pinterest, to her chic sense of style that women still covet to this day, our favorite actress of Old Hollywood has proven to be timeless in all sorts of ways. One of the many ways we choose to remember her is via her amazing choices in eyewear, many styles that she wore are actually available at Vizio Optic.

The obvious place to begin is in the most famous film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, where her little black dress and pearls were part of her iconic look, as were her dark tortoiseshell sunglasses. Often mistaken for Wayfarers, the glamorous, oversized shades are actually Oliver Goldsmith Manhattan sunglasses.

Oliver Goldsmith was behind many of Hepburn’s famous shaded looks in the fifties and sixties, such as the frames seen in the films Charade and  How to Steal A Million. While these specific frames are no longer in production, Oliver Goldsmith Audrey sunglasses have been selling since 1963, when the designer created this style inspired by Ms. Hepburn herself.

This classic round-eye frame is incredibly popular and, according to the brand, one of its most sought-after styles. Currently, the Audrey frame is available in black, black aqua, black lace, light rum, matte black, raspberry coulis, dark tortoiseshell (above), and leopard.

Vizio Optic Featured on STYLE’N

We love the excitement that people have over fashion bloggers (ourselves included), they help keep fashion fresh and exciting and have transformed the industry into a more democratic environment. Thus, it is always a fun opportunity to work with these influencers. This week, we wrote a guest post for STYLE’N, an awesome blog by Naina Singla – a former Boston resident! Now in Washington, D.C., Naina is a stylist who knows what looks great on different body types, so we worked together to show off which frames look great for face shapes as well. Take a look!

Vizio Optic on STYLE'N by Naina Singla

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to your face shape, try to find a celebrity whose features resemble yours. We have included some celebrities with each shape in the STYLE’N blog, but if none of them are similar to yours, simply just Google their name and “face shape,” there is sure to be some discussion out there.

The blog also includes descriptions of facial features under each shape, so if celebrities aren’t doing it for you, get out a mirror and take a look at your beautiful self. Determine whether you have sharp or soft angles and assess the symmetry of your face. If there is an imbalance, such as a triangle in which the forehead is narrower than the jawline, then the pair of designer glasses you select should help remedy that and create a harmonized look. For triangles, we suggest top-heavy frames that focus the eye upwards to create balance.

Head on over to STYLE’N for more suggestions on the best frames for your face shape. Let us know what you choose!

A VERY Special Lafont Trunk Show

Lafont Eyewear Rendezvous collection

If you can believe it, we have even more exciting news to share with you this week. You must clear out your schedules for the evening of August 26th, when Thomas Lafont, the chief designer behind Lafont eyewear, will be our special guest at the annual Vizio Optic Lafont Trunk Show!

From 5-8pm, we’ll be debuting the French brand’s fall/winter 2013-2014 Rendezvous collection, giving you an exclusive look at brand new eyeglasses and sunglasses. This is a very special and rare event – Mr. Lafont will be here to personally style trunk show attendees along with the rest of the Lafont family. Together with the Vizio Optic team, there will be over a dozen stylists on hand to assist in fashion and wardrobing both sunglass and ophthalmic frames.

Things are getting wild next season. Lafont eyewear for fall and winter will include wildlife-inspired prints and details on metal frames, with every bit of passion and detail as the brand’s signature plastic styles. Leopard and zebra prints abound in unexpected colors adding a beautiful texture to each frame.

Other styles in the Rendezvous collection harken back to 1950s Paris, with alluring shapes, two-toned mod effects and engravings giving the frames a distinct mid-century appeal.

You really don’t want to miss out on this rare opportunity to meet the brains behind one of our favorite brands – we are counting down the days!!
