If you haven’t heard, there’s a new brand we’re loving at Vizio Optic. It’s Mikli par Mikli, another beautiful collection of designer eyewear from French designer Alain Mikli. This line is a more affordable option, but still maintains the high quality and stunning designs that Mr. Mikli is known for in his eponymous collection. In this edition of Frame of the Week, our friend Juan takes his frame from the new brand for a spin.

Juan’s face shape can be described as square, meaning his forehead and jawline are of equal width. Flattering frames should mimic that symmetry, being neither top- nor bottom-heavy and maintaining a good balance so no features stand out more than others. Mikli par Mikli 1226 eyeglasses are a great choice, with only a slight flare along the outer edges of the rectangular frame.

We love the subtle gradient of these Mikli par Mikli eyeglasses. It keeps frame from being too dark, which can be a harsh contrast with some skin tones. The smokey grey bottom half also makes the large lenses feel less overwhelming. All in all, the 1226 is a fairly simple frame with a smart design. It is also available in crystal with black arms, tortoise with matte black arms, and red with grey arms.

Every day we should be working on ways to be true to ourselves, whether it’s honing a new skill, strengthening weaknesses or finding a way to express the real you. Many designer glasses give you a great opportunity to show others a piece of your personality. Some designers make art, not just frames; they make you feel a certain way, are crafted with so much care and help you understand a little more about the owner.

Alain Mikli 1120 eyeglasses

In this edition of Frame of the Week, we highlight Alain Mikli 1120 eyeglasses, a pair of specs that says so much with its colors and design. The butterfly-shaped frame is semi-rimless, with a strip of blue over one brow and purple along the other, teal extending down the sides of each lens. The vibrant hues stand out against our friend Diana’s dark brown hair, and its flared upper rims complement her features. Glasses make an important first impression, and it’s clear to us that she appreciates art and creativity just by her choice of frame.

This particular color is discontinued, but there are four others still available (we just had to show you this gorgeous photo of Diana). Each frame is handmade, some with patterned arms that are made multicolored by placing each square of color individually into the clear acetate mold. That takes a lot of work and patience, resulting in an expertly handcrafted frame that is completely unique.

What You Should Know About Alain Mikli’s Move to Luxottica

Update from Vizio Optic:  We no longer carry the Mikli par Mikli or Alain Mikli brands.  Please browse our currently available designer brands and call, chat or email us for personalized assistance. We are an authorized dealer of authentic European and US brands, shipping world-wide!

In November, Alain Mikli Eyewear was sold to Luxottica Group, the manufacturer and distributer of numerous high-end eyewear brands including CHANEL and Ray-Ban. Having an esteemed reputation for handcrafting its frames, the French company’s fans have been concerned about whether the acquisition by a large distributor will reduce the quality of the products. We want you to know that there is no change in the design values that Alain Mikli has always had, frames are still created by hand to provide you with a brilliantly crafted accessory.

The decision to move to Luxottica was done to bring the Alain Mikli brand to a wider audience.

“I have worked for 35 years pursuing the same idea and the same dream: to please our clients,” the designer said in a press release about the acquisition. “Now I can share my passion with many customers around the world.”

And that passion is handcrafting a superior pair of eyeglasses that you can use to truly express a part of your personality. For example, one of our favorite models – Alain Mikli AL1039 glasses – features a unique, marbled effect created by layering colored petals with mother of pearl, resulting in a beautiful depth that captures light at every angle. It’s the creative thinking and eclectic inspiration that makes Alain Mikli such a revered brand, and we want you to rest assured knowing that same high quality will continue into the future.

With that said, we’d love for you to take a look at this wonderful video showing the above frame being made by the man himself:

If you’ve been paying attention lately, we’ve been starting off 2013 with quite a bang. New styles have been coming in almost every week and we’re so excited to bring the latest unique designer eyewear to you on such a regular basis! This week, we introduce to you some new Alain Mikli glasses. The French designer handcrafts each pair, so you know you’re getting an exclusive and high-quality product that no one else in the world will have, as no two are identical. See four new styles below, available now on our website:

Alain Mikli AL0813 eyeglasses

Alain Mikli AL0813 eyeglasses are masculine and handsome, with their semi-rimless design that features a marbled brown plastic frame along the straight brow line. Matching arms emphasize the virile appearance and warm up the look. Adjustable nose pads sit between the rectangular lenses for a comfortable fit.

Alain Mikli AL1010 eyeglasses

Alain Mikli AL1010 eyeglasses are a universally flattering style, made with brown patterned acetate that adds a little liveliness to the neutral color. Rectangular lenses have slightly curved edges, adding angles to the frame that hint at a bit of femininity.

Alain Mikli AL1155 eyeglasses

With a similar silhouette to the AL1010, Alain Mikli AL1155 eyeglasses differ in their beautiful iridescent gray color. Rectangular lenses are softened around the edges as well, with subtle curves along the top line that flatter just about any face. This style is perfect for small to medium-sized faces.

Alain Mikli AL1191 eyeglasses

Last, but not least, are Alain Mikli AL1191 eyeglasses – a bold and bright design that just might literally stop traffic. Red, black, and clear checkered pattern the acetate frame throughout, giving you a funky look that celebrates your individuality. This unisex style has medium rectangular lenses, surrounded by a frame that gradually widens in the outer corners to the hinge.

How to Make a Perfect First Impression

Did you ever consider that your designer eyeglasses may be the first thing someone would notice when they meet you for the first time?

You might think people would look at your new shoes or your tie, your dress or clothes or hair or other more things first. But it’s almost impossible not to look at someone’s face or eyes when you see them. And if you wear glasses, your specs are going to be a big part of that first impression.

That means that when you’re designer glasses, you should be thinking about not only what frames look good on you, but also the impression your frames will give people who are meeting you for the first time. When people come to Vizio Optic to learn more about buying glasses, we like to recommend that they think of eyewear in terms of creating a signature look.

Vue dc LEA eyeglasses

What’s a signature look? It’s the sum of your style, your accessories, and the way you carry yourself that says to the world “I am me! I am X, Y, or Z!” How do glasses fit into a signature look? Think about the chunky frames worn by designer Yves Saint Laurent – what did his glasses say about him? Or if you meet someone wearing glammed-up cat’s eye frames, how does that change your first impression of them?

Because your glasses play such a large role in that first impression people form, it pays to choose frames carefully. To give you a more concrete idea of what we mean, here are four designer frames along with the first impression they might convey:

Alain Mikli Al0322 C. 0102 Eyeglasses The person wearing these Alain Mikli glasses is most definitely fun and fashionable. She or he probably has a vibrant and outgoing personality.

Giorgio Armani 895 eyeglasses

Anyone who chooses these Giorgio Armani glasses has got to be smart, secure, and responsible because it’s such a mature, intelligent style.

Vue DC Art C. 850 Eyeglasses

If you’re wearing Vue dc ART glasses, people will regard you as being geek chic – in other words fashionably intelligent, not a slave to fashion. You may even be taken for an Andy Warhol devotee.

Prodesign -1224-C.5031- Eyeglasses Now ProDesign glasses are some of our favorites in the first-impressions department because from the front they say “responsible adult” but from the side they say “I’m still one of the cool kids!”  That definitely keeps people guessing!

What first impression do your glasses convey?

Why Round Glasses Are BAD For You!

This season is all about vintage inspiration, with eyewear designers taking cues from the past in their fall collections and sending retro silhouettes into the world of fashion. While throwback styles are always going to be a great trend, round designer glasses can be absolutely terrible for you! Yes, we all want to hold each other’s hands and sing Beatles songs in harmony, but we can’t all look like John Lennon while we do it. Want to know why?

Many people simply don’t have the right face shape for round glasses. Specifically, those with round and oval faces should completely avoid this type of frame. These silhouettes have soft facial features, thus the circular lenses will only add more curves to the face and overwhelm your look. John Lennon, on the other hand, had an oblong face, which looks great with tall lenses because they shorten the disproportional  length of the face. Ideally, you want to create balance in your appearance, thus the perfect frames for you are those with a more structured design. This way, rectangles and other geometric frame shapes will add angles to your face and create a complementary look.

If you’re trying to figure out why something looks a bit off when you look in the mirror, your glasses should be one of the first things you check. Round is simply not a style that works on everyone! Unless you’re blessed with majestic cheekbones or a chiseled jaw, stick with angular styles like the Alain Mikli glasses and MYKITA glasses below.

There are plenty of avid fans of Alain Mikli eyewear around the world, but one of the most high-profile fans of the French brand is none other than Samuel L. Jackson. The actor has even supported the company at a few of its events – photos of which can be seen on the Alain Mikli Boutiques USA Facebook page. Most recently, however, the King of Cool was photographed wearing a great pair of Alain Mikli sunglasses:

Looking fly with his red velvet blazer and bowtie, Jackson completes the look with a pair of Alain Mikli AL1207 M04B sunglasses. These aviator shades have a flat gray metal frame with a chunky double bridge, topped with black in this straight-line silhouette. The solid gray hinges lead to the straight black arms, which curve slightly at the ends to sit comfortably over the ears.

Our favorite reading glasses for 2012

It’s no secret these days – more people than ever are in need of corrective eyewear. In fact, more than 90 percent of people wear some form of glasses, according to the Wall Street Journal. This includes reading glasses, which are great for those who spend a lot of time working on the computer.

Reading eyeglasses help reduce strain on your eyes, which often leads to fatigue. Also, those who opt for anti-glare treatments on their lenses will benefit during their nighttime reading, so that light bounces right off the glasses rather than shining right through.

What’s great about reading glasses is that just about any pair of frames can be fitted for them – so here are some of our favorite pairs of designer eyeglasses to use for reading this season:

Prodesign 4650 eyeglasses

Prodesign 4650 eyeglasses in color 6032 are a great unisex option. It looks best on those with sharper angles in their face, as the round curves give a nice contrast and accentuate these features. They are quite a simple design, with a small patch of color on the hinge with matching ear tips.

Alain Mikli AL0322 eyeglasses

Alain Mikli AL0322 glasses are a funkier style, with a full plastic rim that is accented with black and clear stripes. The brand is known for its cool patterns, so make sure to check out the entire collection to find something that fits with your personal style.

Face a Face Ebony 1 eyeglasses
For the ladies, Face a Face has a vast collection of feminine frames that are perfect for reading glasses. Try Face a Face Ebony 1 glasses for example. The cat-eye shape is an extremely popular retro style these days, and the red-to-clear gradient is a modern twist that will definitely be making heads turn. Who wouldn’t want a pair of these chic frames?

We have a whole new selection of Alain Mikli eyewear this season! One of the best things about the French designer is his dedication to making each frame truly unique by handcrafting each one individually. No mass production here – no two frames are truly alike and that’s why we love them. Visit our website to see some of the latest styles – here are some of our favorites!

Alain Mikli 0305 eyeglasses

Alain Mikli 0305 eyeglasses are absolutely stunning, mixing the signature marbled look with metal accents for an intriguing design. The turquoise arm pieces are thin, complementing the small, rectangular lenses that look flattering on petite faces. This frame is also available in red, yellow, bronze/blue.

Alain Mikli AL1010 eyeglasses

Those who like the look of full-frame plastic glasses will like the colorful twist in Alain Mikli AL1010 eyglasses. Layering colored petals with mother of pearl is how the designer got such an interesting depth in this pattern. The frame is rectangular, but with soft and rounded corners for a more sensual feel. AL1010 is a great way to have some subtle color in your eyewear.

Alain Mikli AL0412 eyeglasses

Alain Mikli AL0412 eyeglasses inspire us to get a little funky, with its checkered pattern that can make anyone look like an artistic and playful person. The top of the frame is simple and straight, making it a great option for those who want a more masculine style. The shape is quite simple as well, leaving the details to the two-tone pattern that features white on the top and black on the bottom.
