Buying lenses online for designer glasses

Buying designer glasses online is not always an easy task, especially when faced with so many wonderful options of colors and patterns and amazing innovations. But choosing the frame is the hard part, we’re here to make choosing the lenses as simple as possible. If this is your first time buying lenses online, you may not realize that there are a few different choices you must make to get the perfect one for you. So, what are your lens options when buying glasses online?

First, you need to decide whether you want the lens to come with any treatments, which are actually coatings over the lens that have various functions. The options Vizio Optic offers include the following:

  • AR, or anti-reflective, treatment – This features a coating the reduces glare. If you do a lot of driving at night, this treatment can improve your visual acuity and help prevent accidents by reducing the glare from oncoming traffic.
  • Scratch-resistant coating – A must if you’re an accident-prone person or if you participate in sports where you keep your eyeglasses on to see.
  • Transition coating – You may have seen this before but you didn’t know what it was called. Transition lenses darken when exposed to ultraviolet rays. While not as effective as a pair of sunglasses, transition lenses help protect your eyes during short-term exposure to the sun.

Next, you’ll need to choose your desired thickness of the lens. Your options are as follows:

  • Regular – The thickest option, regular lenses are a basic style and work for just about everyone. If you only need glasses for reading, regular will be fine for you.
  • Polycarbonate – These lenses are thinner and are better for those who are involved in high-impact sports. They are designed to be shock-resistent, so they are also great for the accident-prone as well.
  • High index lenses – As thin and light as you can get, high index lenses are also the most comfortable because they feel as if they’re barely there. There are varying degrees of thinness – 1.67 being the first level, and 1.74 being the slimmest lens available.

That’s all there is to it! While there are many great options when it comes to finding the perfect lens for you, it’s a completely simple process that will make ordering your new glasses a snap. Got any questions? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll help you get on your way to finishing your order!

As Milan Fashion Week gets under way, we’ve been tearing through street style photos and loving every second of the unique looks and stunning accessories. Of course, we expected to see some of our favorite brands popping up here and there, but none as bold and bright as MYKITA Janis sunglasses, seen in French Vogue. The all-black outfit, though already chic with its leather and fur accents, is brought to a whole new level with the bold orange lenses – round of course, the most popular silhouette of the season.

MYKITA Janis sunglasses

Seen above in copper with blue/cognac gradient lenses, and in the photo in matte black with orange flash lenses, Janis is also offered in gold with green/rose gradient lenses. This style is part of the Bernhard Willhelm collaboration with MYKITA, which also resulted in the Franz sunglasses we know and love.

Knicks player Carmelo Anthony was also spotted in Janis recently, completing his stylish blue suit and striped sweater combo  with the retro shades at the 2013 NBA All-Star Weekend dunk contest.

And if you were ever in any doubt that these designer sunglasses were a good choice for your favorite fashion accessory this year, take note that Beyonce wears them, too. Anything that’s good for Queen B is good for us!

Our two favorite things, designer eyewear and fashion, have come together for photographer Javier Lovera, who recently shot model Nicki in a variety of amazing sunglasses. As we flipped through the stunning photos of perfectly round lenses and patterned specs, we spotted a pair of vintage Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses! Seen above paired with Lulu Frost jewelry and a Balmain leather top, Nicki mixes boho chic style with an edge, topping it off with the coolest pair of butterfly shades we’ve ever seen.

Oliver Goldsmith Butterfly sunglassesWhile the model is sporting the year’s favored emerald color, the above shades are the originals, with a black quartz frame and brown and rose lenses. The Butterfly is a prized member of Oliver Goldsmith’s vintage collection, which consists of 20 unique and eye-popping (pun intended) frames from the depths of the designer’s creative mind in years past, including the crazy TV Screens frame with antennas!

“I don’t believe in those theories about a certain style suiting a certain shape of face. Life is too short to worry about such things. if you find a shape you like, have it,” he said, in 1969.

If you’ve never seen the vintage archive, take a look, it’s worth every minute!

Since we’ve investigated what frames Mila Kunis, Julia Roberts and other actresses have been wearing in their latest movies, we thought it’d be fun to do another this week, since the beautiful Catherine Zeta Jones wears a stunning pair of designer glasses in the film Side Effects (which is out in theaters now). Looking as stunning as ever, CZJ dons a pair of slim, dark-rimmed specs that give her a professional and incredibly sexy look.

Now, on to what she’s actually wearing! CZJ is wearing a pair of ic! berlin glasses known as Black Hole, part of its plastic! collection. This large, rectangular frame comes in black, flattering her round face shape by adding more angles to her look. This creates balance, which is what we look for in the perfect pair of glasses. The color also stands out wonderfully against her fair skin and looks great with her dark hair. Great choice!

ic! berlin Black Hole eyeglasses feature the brand’s patented screw-less hinge, which uses a spring clasp to connect the arms and rim rather than a screw that could become loose or require adjustments over time. It is also made of titanium (with acetate mounted on the front rim), which improves its strength and makes the frame highly flexible. This style is also available in brown with turquoise accents and brown or pearl arms, Havana with chrome arms, and gray matte with pearl arms.

Valentine’s Day may have been last week, but we still love this video from Face a Face giving a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Bocca Valentine. This single-lens pair of designer sunglasses is totally unique and certainly novel, with its heart-shaped red rim that leads to the famously voluptuous legs that we know from Face a Face Bocca 3 sunglasses. White arms lead the way to matching red pumps, completing this awesomely festive pair of shades.

Face a Face glasses are all carefully handcrafted in France, and in this little film you’ll see just how much care goes into making your designer glasses and sunglasses. It’s an impressive process and we applaud brands that still work by hand to provide you with the highest quality product!

The original Bocca is inspired by surrealist painter Salvador Dali, whose Mae West Lips couch led the designers to create the limited edition frame. As you can see below, the rims actually took the shape of lips! From there, Face a Face has reinvented the funky frame several times, and we love the exclusive and creative Bocca Valentine.

What do you think? Would you wear it? For a similar pair to the original Bocca, try a pair of Face a Face Senso 2 sunglasses, a more wearable version for your everyday look :)

As per usual, Johnny Depp looked pretty great at last night’s Grammy Awards. But it’s not just his long locks and handsomely disheveled outfit we’re looking at, it’s his great designer sunglasses! Mr. Depp is always a source of eyewear envy, from his small, circular glasses he wears on a regular basis to the cool shades he dons on the red carpet. Never one to choose something ordinary, the actor always goes with a frame that makes a statement, and below, he wears a pair of traditional aviators with lenses that are anything but.

We love the cool slate blue color of the lenses, adding to the retro look of his outfit. Rather than the typical teardrop-shaped lenses of aviator sunglasses, Depp opted for more of a rectangular silhouette. The narrow frame flatters his triangular face, adding a little width to the eye area for a more balanced appearance. Because that’s what you’re looking for when trying to find the perfect pair of sunglasses, a great balance so no one area of you face is more overwhelmed than another.

Helping you look and feel great is our biggest focus, and lately we’ve been getting a lot of questions about professional eyewear. Our selection includes plenty of brightly colored and unique designer glasses, but sometimes what you need is a streamlined look that emits a powerful and intelligent vibe, and we’ve got that for you, too!

While there are plenty of creative industries that embrace colors and patterns in your eyewear, those who work in a corporate atmosphere may want a minimal design. For us, that means an executive-style, sleek and modern look that bleeds professionalism without being too stuffy. Here are a few of our favorites:

What are you doing on Saturday, March 2?

ic! berlin trunk show at Vizio Optic

Hanging out with us, we hope! Clear your schedules from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm for a fun afternoon at the ic! berlin trunk show, featuring the 2013 collection of designer eyeglasses and sunglasses. Bring the kids along, too! This season, ic! berlin glasses for children are actually designed by kids! So your little ones will get to have an exclusive “for us, by us” accessory.

As always at our trunk show events, you’ll get to meet with our ic! berlin eyewear representative and members of the Vizio Optic team for free consultations. Our passion is helping you find the perfect frame for your face, and on this special day you’ll have the chance to explore the German brand’s entire line, so try on every pair if you like, we’ll help you the whole way!

If you are a regular reader of the Eyewear Fashion blog, you know that ic! berlin is known for its innovative hinge technology. Rather than using screws, which can loosen over time and require adjustments, the arms are attached with a spring hinge that can snap on and off. This makes repairs very simple and increases the flexibility and durability of the frame. The glasses are also made with lightweight titanium, increasing their strength as well.

So do yourself a favor and get down to Vizio Optic on Saturday, March 2 for a look at the full collection of ic! berlin eyeglasses and sunglasses. Visitors will be entered to win a free ic! berlin frame of their choice and can enjoy $100 off their prescription purchase. We can’t wait to see you!

A couple weeks ago we hosted our annual Lafont trunk show, a fun and colorful even that helps us kick off 2013 with wine, music, and a whole lot of French elegance. Lafont eyewear was on display for all of Greater Boston to come and enjoy and we had such a great turnout! Here are a few photos from the event, in case you missed it!

Looks like fun, doesn’t it? Come join us at our next trunk show with ic! berlin on March 2, and a CHANEL private fitting event on April 13. Make sure to get on the mailing list to be the first to hear more details!

Attention lovers! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you’ll be needing the perfect gift for that special person in your life. We have hundreds of beautiful designer glasses to choose from, and feel free to use our Frame Yourself guide to help select the right frame for your partner. But that can’t be all!

Once you’ve read our guide on how to buy eyeglasses online, it’s on to the accessories. Here are two things we think she’ll love this Valentine’s Day:

Valentine's Day microfiber cloth eyeglasses accessory

This special microfiber cloth comes in pink with white and red heart details. The material is super soft so she can clean her designer glasses without scratching the lenses. Many people think that a towel or a shirt will do to wipe off the lenses, but these fabrics can be slightly abrasive and while you may not see any scratches initially, these little marks can build over time and ruin the surface. Microfiber is ultra soft so lenses can be cleaned without causing any damage.

La LOOP heart necklace

La LOOP eyewear accessories are always a good choice as well, especially this glasses necklace in silver that features little heart-shaped charms throughout the chain. This piece of jewelry is a two-in-one gift – she can hang her glasses on the loop when she’s not wearing them so she never has to worry about misplacing her frames, and it acts as a beautiful necklace and statement accessory when she does have on her frames.

What’s the one gift that never disappoints? A Vizio Optic gift card! If you’re not sure what your special someone will be happy with this Valentine’s Day, give her the gift of choice, available in multiple denominations on our e-gift certificate page.
