MYKITA Rolf sunglasses

Anyone looking for the ultimate subtle celeb-luxe accessory should check out the MYKITA Rolf, an extremely light unisex Aviators handmade in Germany. You’ve probably seen this unique style of MYKITA sunglasses on celebrities like Brad Pitt, Hugh Grant, and Angelina Jolie without even realizing it because these sunglasses are an exercise in stylishly low-key luxury.

MYKITA Rolf polarized sunglasses feature the brand’s signature screwless hinge, and it’s paired with a classic double bridge, making them an amazing choice for everyday wear. Plus, they’re durable so you never have to worry about overdoing it when you’re wearing your Rolfs.

But what makes this design different from your everyday aviator sunglasses are lenses that are subtly angled downward near the bridge, giving them a sexy, exciting feel. These aren’t your dad’s aviators by any stretch of the imagination. MYKITA Rolf polarized sunglasses are retro by virtue of being aviators, but their archetypal silhouette belies a bold, modern, and powerful style of sunglasses that will add an air of luxury to any outfit and any activity.

Why do we wear MYKITA Rolf? Because they make us look luxurious without being blatantly showy. Now we want to hear from you: What’s your secret eyewear luxury?

Is it possible to define oneself as both avant-garde and classic? If you’re MYKITA Eyewear, then the answer is most definitely yes. Founded in 2003 by Harald Gottschling, Daniel Haffmans, Philipp Haffmans, and Moritz Krueger in Berlin, Germany, stunned the eyewear world when it introduced its premier Collection No.1 at the Silmo international eyewear fair in the fall of the following year. Why MYKITA? Though the name evokes the minimalism and simplicity of the Far East, many of the brand’s enthusiasts are surprised to learn that the name is actually a clever portmanteau. MYKITA’s first headquarters were located in a former daycare center, known as a kita, in Berlin.

In their opening collection, designers Haffmans and Gottschling managed to capture harmony between man and mechanism with the ingenious use of surgical-grade stainless steel anda revolutionary hinge apparatus that made screws and soldering obsolete. These innovations resulted in modernized traditional eyeglass frames and sunglasses that were lightweight, yet incredibly durable and unbelievably comfortable. The collection remains a hallmark of elegance and aesthetic clarity that can be as colorful or as subdued as the wearer prefers.

Two years later, again at Silmo, MYKITA unveiled their Collection No. 2, which was in many ways a departure from the brand’s previously established design sensibilities (though elements of the paradigm-changing hinge remained). Instead of its signature sleek slim-line metal frames, this collection featured full-bodied, three dimensional acetate frames that, while still a variation on long-established eyewear styles, were most definitely more playful and sculptural than their predecessors. To make a fuller frame required yet another leap in innovation: a snap-hinge that does away with the unappealing gap that’s left between the hinge and the frame on traditional acetate glasses and sunglasses.

Both collections have contributed to MYKITA’s celebrated reputation in the design world. The brand’s sophisticated look, cutting-edge hardware, and impeccable workmanship led to MYKITA winning awards at several high-profile international design competitions for eyeglass design and overall product design, including the 2007 Silmo d’Or Award, the 2007 Red Dot Design Award, and the iF Product Design Award in both 2007 and 2010.

From there, MYKITA revealed a passion for taking lightweight eyewear to new heights with their LITE collection, which is comprised of ultra light metal frames consisting of no more than three individual pieces. Then came from LUXE line, with a high-end retro look marked by details like buffalo horn tips and precious metal coatings, and the LIMITED collection, in which MYKITA partnered with various designers to create the MYKITA sunglasses which are unlike any on the market today.

In April of 2007, the brand opened its first exclusive shop in Berlin, with the entire store concept designed to reflect the forward-thinking philosophy and unique look of MYKITA.All MYKITA frames continue to be hand-assembled at MYKITA’s own production site in Berlin and are available at over 1,400 select high-end opticians across the globe, including at Vizio Optic in Boston, MA.

We are super excited to announce this new feature on the website that we have been working on since late last year – the Eyewear LOOKBOOK. We copied this idea from various high end eyeglass designers’ websites while noticing that this is only made by designers but no eyeglass store has done this yet so we figured we should try it out.

So on our website we photographed a handpicked selection of eyeglass frames presented on real people including Monica C. who works here. The Eyewear LOOKBOOK features some of our favorite eyeglasses and these are all our own photographs that you won’t find anywhere else with faces sporting glasses from Alain Mikli, Face a Face, Lafont and Vue DC and other eyewear styles.

It turns out that we are the first eyeglass store in the world who offers this feature to show real faces wearing our glasses online. Of course others have professional models and photographs from eyeglass designers but these are all our very own and boy it took a lot of time and effort to get this project finished but we are glad we did and we love how it looks. What do you think?

For those of you who wear or at least tried on the LINDBERG Spirit Titanium rimless eyeglass frames, you know what an amazing pair of eyewear feels like in its lightest form. In these elegant glasses, you don’t feel much because they feel as light as feathers so you barely feel them at all. They are made out of Titanium so they are even lighter still and nearly indestructible. And the hinge has no screws. No screws means less weight than what already feels weightless.  So LINDBERG Spirit Titanium frames are in that unique class of eyewear that fades into the background while still attracting admiration and attention due to their very elegant and minimalistic, hand-made Danish design.

We think that LINDBERG Spirit Titanium glasses are the most elegant and the lightest rimless eyeglass frames in the world at just 2.8 grams. With no soldering, screws, or rivets, the design features ultra-thin, ultra-durable titanium wire artfully twisted into temples, hinges, bridge, and clips accommodating any number of frame colors and lens shapes and types. Plus, the remarkable flexibility of this titanium makes LINDBERG Spirit rimless glasses almost entirely customizable as we and other opticians can tailor the temples and bridges to match your style (pick any color!) and ensure a perfect fit for your face. These are truly custom-made glasses that take no less effort than tailoring a custom suit or tuxedo.

Since the Danish firm of architects Dissing &Weitling collaborated with optometrist Poul-Jorn LINDBERG to create these striking rimless frames in 1983, the LINDBERG Spirit Titanium (and previously its predecessor LINDBERG Air Titanium) have been awarded many of the most prestigious international design awards.

Today, these pioneers of ultra-lightweight eyewear are as smart and stylish as ever, with devotees among the celebrity set – as well as the Danish and British royal families. Try them on, and you may just become the newest disciple of LINDBERG Spirit Titanium eyewear.

Here are some examples of LINDBERG Spirit Titanium rimless frames – do you like them as much as we do?

People love getting Prescription Sunglasses because they don’t have to choose between being able to see well and read a book on the beach and wearing a regular pair of sunglasses to protect the eyes from the dangerous ultra-violet sun rays (but without seeing well as they don’t have your Rx lens in them).  But with Prescription Sunglasses you can get sports or designer sunglasses look for an individualistic appeal into which we or your optician can put prescription lenses.  And the UV coating on the prescription sunglass lenses are an absolute necessity to protect your eyes from the dangerous ultra-violet rays.

Some of our customers ask about a slightly less desirable choice – the sunglass clip-ons that get clipped on top of your regular Rx prescription glasses. But do you really want to walk around with these two sets of lenses or worry about losing the clip-on when you misplace it?  So prescription sunglasses make all this a non-issue for the glasses wearer, who would otherwise have to settle for a combo of non-prescription sunglasses and contact lenses or the fashion limitations of the aforementioned clip-on lenses.

Whether you wear reading glasses and you dream of flipping through a magazine on the beach or by the pool or you’re a full-time glasses wearer who wants UV protection, you may want to look into getting prescription sunglasses that will help you do both.

An incredible variety of sunglasses can be made with prescription in them – including bifocal and progressive lenses. And it’s even possible to find wraparound styles in certain prescriptions. Polarized prescription sunglasses are yet another option and Maui Jim and Oakley as well as Ray Ban make excellent Rx sunglasses.  We prefer having prescriptions in your sunglasses over clip-ons.  But what do you prefer?

In the case of Danish eyewear master and designer Paul-Jorn Lindberg, inspiration was born of exasperation – namely, exasperation at the fact that the eyeglass frames in LINDBERG’s very own shop held little appeal for him. First came his groundbreaking LINDBERG Air Titanium (the predecessor of the LINDBERG Spirit Titanium) rimless frames, which have stayed on the  radar for almost 30 years. Then came LINDBERG’s innovation: LINDBERG Rim Titanium eyeglass frames, sleek super lightweight full-rim frames without any screws.  These are the favorite of executives, politicians and royalty alike.

Just as in the original LINDBERG rimless eyeglass frames, everything superfluous – welding, screws, and rivets – has been eliminated from LINDBERG Rim Titanium glasses, leaving behind only what is necessary for absolute comfort and superior style. These are frames that have been reduced to the bare essentials while maintaining their innate magnificence of design. It’s not at all surprising that LINDBERG Rim Titanium glasses are the glasses for anyone who wants to project a calculated image – the eyes reveal what they want to reveal while the super slim titanium rims add just the tiniest touch of mystery.

As far as looks go, LINDBERG Rim Titanium glasses take Danish minimalism to a whole new level with incredible design finesse and true aesthetic innovation. Their simple elegance belies strength and flexibility that demonstrates that, yes, less can be more and beauty can be strong.

We really like these LINDBERG Rim Titanium glasses.  How do you like them?

Best of Boston 2012 Award by Boston Magazine
We are honored to be the 1st in history and the only eyeglasses store in Boston’s history to win “Best of Boston” four times.
On July 27, we were truly surprised, floored, and genuinely honored to receive the highly prestigious Best of Boston Eyeglasses 2010 award from the Boston Magazine.

Since this is our 4th time, we simply couldn’t believe our eyes and ears.  Vizio Optic was chosen by Boston Magazine as the “Best of Boston Eyeglasses” in 2006, 2007 and 2009 and now to be at the top again in 2010 is beyond our belief. We just don’t know whom to thank at Boston Magazine as we are genuinely grateful to their wonderful team for choosing Vizio Optic again. Boston Magazine writes that they give their experts top-secret assignments to go out and seek out the best while being completely anonymous during their shopping assignments. Apparently they are instructed to keep their Boston Magazine association highly confidential and not reveal the secret to the shop and restaurant owners.  Well, we must admit that they did an excellent job because after the 4th time of winning this coveted award, we still cannot figure out who came in from Boston magazine, who selected us and how it was done.  It’s truly a mystery and we are in awe of Boston Magazine to do this so well.

In this new August 2010 special issue of the Boston Magazine, the editors wrote about Vizio Optic: “The petite Brookline Village shop is a four-time Best of Boston winner, and for a good reason: Vizio Optic’s top-notch service starts with the on-site optometrist and ends with the 360-degree photo booth, which allows buyers to see how those glasses look from the side, too. More than 1,000 frame choices include high-fashion, time-honored favorites from CHANEL, Alain Mikli, and Robert Marc, as well as funky, lesser-known lines like Kata and Lafont.”

We just cannot thank Boston Magazine enough!!!  And we are also grateful to our customers for their love and support.  And we are also grateful to our Customer Loyalty Team for helping Vizio win yet again!
